Verstehen, in the context of German philosophy and the social sciences in general, has been used since the late 19th century. The term is closely associated with the work of the German sociologist Max Weber, whose ideas would profoundly influence social theory and also social research. Verstehen is an intuitive method of interpreting human culture, especially in its subjective motivational and evaluative aspects, by understanding symbolic relations. More precisely one can say that it means: to put oneself in the other's shoes when analysing a certain situation.

The collection was born from the movement of two women, Mia and Sabrina, one a therapist and the other an artist, who met on September 2020 in a farm in Wales, where they were volunteers. Mia, who has no academic background in Fine Art, took this shot with a Samsung Galaxy S9 with a broken screen and could barely see what she was photographing. This whole shoot was done in the late afternoon of September 27, after their work and lasted around two hours in total.

Verstehen is a collection of images representing the struggle to achieve harmony and balance within the varied, and often conflicting, events of our lives. The mind can end up ensnared by external events, deep depressions etc causing the person to believe that this period of time will end and they will return to their initial state of 'balance' unharmed from this occurrence.

Haruki Murakami challenges this poetically in his book, Kafka on the Shore, when he states, "And once the storm is over, you won't remember how you got through it, how you survived. You won't even be sure if the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you will not be the same person who went in. That's what this storm is all about."

Beliefs and perceptions are shattered as masks uncover deeper edges to our beings, or elements that have been relentlessly avoided, repressed or refuted. Our attempts to rebuke the devil within us lead us to experience great swathes of self-loathing, punishment and compensation. We separate ourselves from our futile attempt at perfection and valour, and stand, at last, with ourselves. A moment of cardinal choice appears, and this is where we choose to stand, hand in hand, with all that we are and all that is within us.

This collection also represents a personal reflection of the journey of these women, who have taken great steps to change the status quo of their individual lives; ending marriages, leaving high status jobs, setting boundaries in personal relationships and learning to thrive in solitude. They have felt the deepest despair, the power of vulnerability and finally begun to find the tools with which they can ultimately live their lives in ever more authentic ways.
