ANIMAL FARM

The collection entitled Animal Farm is inspired by the novel of George Orwell. I am using famous portraits of European monarchs that are related to the colonial process across the Global South. Those images are somewhat sarcastic and portray native animals from places in South Asia, Africa, and South America in allegorical poses. These animals appear in elaborate costumes with plants native to the regions mentioned before. So far this collection has a selection of 45 monarchs, the paintings will be around 100 x 70 cm and I am still in the research and early sketching stage.

PATTERN

The pattern makes an allusion to the pattern found in the floor of Teatro Amazonas. The intercalation of jacaranda and pau brasil, symbolises the meeting of the waters of the rivers Negro and Solimões. The Teatro Amazonas is one of the most important theatres in Brazil and the main postcard of the city of Manaus. Located in Largo de São Sebastião, in the Historical Center, it was inaugurated in 1896 to meet the desire of the Amazonian elite of the time, who idealized the city at the height of the great cultural centers. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful theatres in the world.
